Apply Now for the Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Award 2025

The Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Award is now accepting applications for its 2025 session. This prestigious award provides financial assistance to aspiring writers who wish to attend the Iceland Writers Retreat but lack the means to do so. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are pleased to offer more scholarships this year.


1. Benefits of the Award

This award provides two funding options to help writers attend the retreat:

  • Full Funding: Covers the participant fee, four nights of accommodation at the retreat hotel, and round-trip flights to Iceland.
  • Partial Funding: Covers only the participant fee.

2. Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older by April 23, 2025.
  • Demonstrated financial need is required.
  • Open to writers interested in literary fiction, non-fiction, or memoir.
  • Family members of judges or previous IWR attendees are not eligible to apply.

3. Award Coverage

  • Full Funding: Includes participant fee, accommodation, and flights.
  • Partial Funding: Includes participant fee only.
  • Not covered: Airport transfers, travel insurance, visas, or meals not listed in the retreat itinerary.

4. Selection Process

  • Recipients will be selected based on their potential as writers and demonstrated financial need.
  • Responses to application questions will also be evaluated.
  • Recipients must be available for media interviews and share their retreat experience with others.

5. Application Instructions

  • Carefully follow the application instructions to avoid disqualification.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Writing samples should not exceed 1,000 words.

6. Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: November 1, 2024, at 23:59 UTC (1 minute before midnight).
  • No changes can be made after submission. You will receive an email confirmation once your application is submitted.

7. Tips for a Successful Application

  • Highlight why you’re specifically interested in this retreat and its faculty.
  • Ensure your writing samples align with the retreat’s focus on literary fiction, non-fiction, or memoir.
  • Clearly explain your financial need and any efforts to secure additional funding.
  • Share creative ideas on how you will promote your retreat experience to others.
